NASCAR Breaks Ground on Hall of Fame (Finally)

In an event that was many years overdue, NASCAR has finally scooped up the first shovel-full of dirt and red clay in efforts to build a Hall of Fame, breaking ground on the $107.5 million facility in Charlotte:

Seven-time Cup series champion Richard Petty joined NASCAR president Mike Helton and others in moving the first clumps of red clay for the $107.5 million facility that is to open by the spring of 2010. They used shovels designed to look like pit crew gas cans amid the roar of engines from replica cars of Petty and Dale Earnhardt.

“This will preserve, protect and present that history to NASCAR fans of today and future NASCAR fans,” Helton said.

To which a goodly number of fans are probably exclaiming “Good, but Jesus Christ, why did it take you so dang long to get around to deciding to build a Hall of Fame in Charlotte?” I can understand Daytona getting a few nods as far as a potential location, back when that was being decided, but why they wasted time pretending that it might be built at Atlanta or Kansas City, I do not know.

So now we all get to twiddle our thumbs until spring 2010, when it’s scheduled to be open.

Twiddle….twiddle. In the meantime, while NASCAR fans wait for the Hall of fame…they can watch strange lightsin the sky. Last night, over 800 calls were made to 911 about a “strange object” in the sky.

Woo hoo, an actual comment! And thanks for the kind words.

The lights in Charlotte thing is a little bit odd. Apparently a chicken/egg situation, as based on various reports there were definitely lots of miltary helicopters flying around (which is apparently not that unusual for the area), so were all of the calls from people just mistaking those for UFOs? Or were the military helicopters there BECAUSE of the UFOs?

    *cue creepy UFO noise*
